The Board of Governors of the California Community Colleges took the following actions at its May 2-3, 2005, meeting:

  • Resolutions (Item 2) (050105) Presented resolutions to Felix Galaviz and Patricia McGrath. (Attached.)
  • Minutes (Item 3) (050205) Approved the minutes of the March 7-8, 2005, meeting of the Board of Governors. Approved the minutes of the April 12, 2005, teleconference meeting of the Board of Governors.
  • Positions on State Legislation (Item 5.1) (050305) Adopted positions on legislation as follows:

  • Appointment of Director to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for California Community Colleges - Janice Dehesh (Item 9.1) (050405) Reappointed Janice Dehesh to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for California Community Colleges for a regular three-year term.

  • Appointment of Director to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for California Community Colleges - Patricia Sullivan (Item 9.2) (050505) Reappointed Patricia Sullivan to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for California Community Colleges for a regular three-year term.
  • Appointment of Director to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for California Community Colleges - James Sargen (Item 9.3) (050605) Reappointed James Sargen to the Board of Directors of the Foundation for California Community Colleges for a regular three-year term.

  • Request for Approval of the Los Rios Community College District's Proposed Natomas Educational Center (Item 12) (050905) Approved the Natomas Educational Center, as presented.

 

  • Amendment of Board of Governors Standing Order 402 (Item 13) (051005) Approved the amendment to Standing Order 402, as presented.

Feliz Galaviz


Whereas, Felix Galaviz served with outstanding merit and excellence as the Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director of the Puente Project, a nationally recognized and exemplary academic preparation program that has successfully bridged classrooms and communities for over 43,000 educationally disadvantaged students who have enrolled in four-year colleges and universities, earned college degrees, and returned to the community as mentors and leaders of future generations; and

Whereas, Mr. Galaviz and Patricia McGrath designed, taught and co-conducted the first Puente Project at Chabot College, Hayward, in 1982, which offered Hispanic students an innovative program incorporating accelerated writing classes, academic counseling and community mentoring; and

Whereas, Mr. Galaviz was one of the designers of the Puente teacher/counselor/mentor training program which prepares teams to replicate the innovative and effective methodologies of the Puente Project throughout community college campuses in California, thereby extending the impact of Puente training services to nearly 400,000 students; and

Whereas, Mr. Galaviz and Ms. McGrath were recognized at the White House when the Puente Project was selected as one of ten winners of the Innovations in American Government Award sponsored by the Ford Foundation, the John F. Kennedy School of Government, and the Council for Excellence in Government.
Whereas, Mr. Galaviz expanded the Puente Project to 95 programs at 55 community colleges, 36 high schools, and two regional centers in California before retiring from the Puente Project in 2004 after twenty-three productive and fulfilling years; now, therefore, be it

Resolved On this 2nd day of May, 2005, that the Members of the Board of Governors and the Chancellor extend to Felix Galaviz a profound appreciation for his leadership, dedication, vision and a lifetime of outstanding service and achievement, and commend him for the many contributions he has made to the students and staff of the California Community Colleges; and be it further

Resolved, That the Board fondly extends to Mr. Galaviz its sincerest wish for continued success in all of his future endeavors.

Patricia McGarth

Whereas, Patricia McGrath served with outstanding merit and excellence as the Cofounder and CO-Executive Director of the Puente Project, a nationally recognized and exemplary academic preparation program that has successfully bridged classrooms and communities for over 43,000 educationally disadvantaged students who have enrolled in four-year colleges and universities, earned college degrees, and returned to the community as mentors and leaders of future generations; and
