  Puente Project:
California Community Colleges

The Puente Project is a national award-winning program that is co-sponsored by the California Community Colleges and the University of California. For over 20 years, the Puente Project has improved the transfer rate of thousands of California's educationally underrepresented students. The Project has increased the number of underserved students who enroll in four-year colleges and universities, earn college degrees, and eventually return to the community as mentors and leaders to future generations. Begun in 1981 at Chabot College, the Puente Project has since expanded to 45 community colleges and 34 high schools statewide.

Major Issues:

2003-2004 Budget: In FY 2003-2004, the Puente Project was allocated $1,921,000 from Proposition 98 funds administered by the California Community Colleges. Additional funds supporting Project activities are provided by the University of California Office of the President, participating community colleges, and private foundations.

Expansion of Regional Centers and Training Opportunities: The Puente Project is nationally recognized for the quality of its staff development and training programs that prepare community college instructors and counselors with effective methodologies for improving the academic achievement of underserved students, working collaboratively across academic disciplines, and increasing community-based support for students and colleges. The Project seeks to broaden its network of programs to a total of 75 community colleges in the near future.

With the establishment of two regional centers in Hayward and at Santa Ana College this year, the Puente Project proposes to expand its staff development programs by offering training opportunities to community college faculty currently not involved in the Project.
Staff interested in obtaining more information about the work of the regional centers, establishment of a new Puente program, and staff development opportunities may contact: Felix Galaviz, Executive Director, The Puente Project, at (510) 987-9552 or felix.galaviz@ucop.edu; Ernest Z. Robles, Northern California Regional Director, (510) 987-9736 or ernest.robles@ucop.edu; or Dennis Lopez, Southern California Regional Director, (714) 564-5216 or dennis.lopez@ucop.edu.
