California Community Colleges Chancellor Marshall (Mark) Drummond kicked off the California Transportation and Logistics Institute at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, on Monday, October 9, 2006.
Cal Poly Pomona President J. Michael Ortiz welcomed attendees to the event. In addition to Chancellor Drummond, other panelists who participated in the kick off were Victoria Bradshaw, Secretary, Workforce Development Agency; Ray Holdsworth, Co-Chair, Southern California Leadership Council Center for Economic Development; William Allen, President/CEO, LA County Economic Development Corp.; Jose Millan, Vice Chancellor, Economic & Workforce Development Division, California Community Colleges; plus several other prominent business leaders.
The California Community College System, the California State University System, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., and the Southern California Leadership Council formed the Institute to develop a work force prepared to fill the explosion of job openings in the logistics and transportation field.
Labor Secretary Bradshaw discussed logistics and transportation in California’s economic future. In sharing the genesis of the Institute, Chancellor Drummond declared that the education community has an opportunity to develop new programs, because there could be as many as a million new jobs in this "enormous industry segment" added over next 25 years. "That's considerable amount of workforce training," Chancellor Drummond said. "We have ten community college districts represented here and three Cal State campuses. But this is not a closed society. Others certainly can come aboard when we get this rolling. Because we'll need everyone's help."
Vice Chancellor Millan said the kickoff was a historic event. "This is the first time that you have a fully articulate committed workforce development program involving K-12, the community colleges, the CSU and employers," he said.
